Sports stars who wear contact lenses

Take a look at some of these sporting superstars who rely on their contact lenses to help them be the best in the game

With another sporting summer well underway, we’ll likely all be out trying our hand at our favourite sports while the weather’s still forgiving. From daily viewing of Wimbledon to the Confederations Cup Final, sports will be all over screens and all through our minds. But as we get out and get involved in our own backyard games, it’s worth noting that not even all the sporting superstars have perfect vision. There are plenty of legendary athletes and world No.1s that rely on their contact lenses to get to the top of their game every time they hit the court or field. We thought we’d take a look at some of the global sporting icons that wear contact lenses while they compete:

Petr Čech

The current Arsenal keeper and most-capped Czech Republic international Petr Čech is still going strong at the ripe old age of 35. He’s lifted the Premier League and Champions League with Chelsea, as well as the FA cup with Arsenal, and is still hungry for more success.

The Czech goalie wears contact lenses to make sure he’s always got his eyes on the prize, and on the ball.

Novak Djokovic

Poor Nole hasn’t had the best year of his career, it’s safe to say, and has slipped from No.1 in the world to No.4 in the last 12 months. But we’ve no doubt he’ll be back to his world-beating best in no time at all. In fact, we’re expecting to see the same form that helped him on his way to holding all 4 grand slams at this time last year.

As he has been throughout every one of his successes, Djokovic has been a contact lens wearer on the court. Free from the constraints of glasses, the Serb has been able to power across the court, picking his shots with razor-like precision.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Probably the most recognisable face in football today, Cristiano Ronaldo has gone from strength to strength throughout his career. From his first start at Sporting Lisbon and his first Champions League medal with Manchester United, to becoming the all-time leading scorer for Real Madrid and winning Euro 2016 last year with Portugal, Ronaldo doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

How has he been able to remain at the top of his game for so long? Well, it’s probably down to his legendary natural ability and athletic prowess. But, Ronaldo does owe his success in part to contact lenses always keeping his vision clear and his view on goal true.

Phil Mickelson

Winner of 5 major championships, Phil Mickelson is a household name in the golfing world. Phil’s never been known as one to shy away from the trickier shots, and is renowned for both his clinical short game, as well as his powerful drive. Another club in the golfer’s bag, however, are his contact lenses.

With accuracy and an attention to detail being essential for a professional golfer, Mickelson has these skills down to a tee as a result of his exceptional vision – aided by his lenses.
