Sports eye safety awareness month is in April, it’s an important time to draw attention to the importance of keeping your eyes safe during sports. No matter what sport you’re playing, there can usually be a risk of eye injury if you’re not careful. There are thousands of sports-related eye injuries every year. Whether you wear contact lenses or spectacles, there are ways to avoid this. There is a higher risk of eye injury in some sports and less risk in others, but precautions should be taken in all sports for your best chance at avoiding harm. What sports cause eye injury?

Tens of thousands of eye injuries occur each year, but with the right precautions this can be avoided. Sports that are particularly prone to causing eye injury include:

  • Basketball
  • Rounders/baseball
  • Hockey
  • Cricket
  • Paintball
  • Squash
  • Rugby
  • Tennis
  • Football
  • Golf

Games that feature a ball of some kind are more likely to cause eye injuries. This isn’t surprising when you consider a flying ball could easily go in any direction if the hitter isn’t particularly skilled (or just isn’t paying enough attention). The good news is that protective eyewear can help you to avoid injury to the eyes while playing sports.

What kind of eye injury can you get from sport?

Some of the most common eye injuries you can get while playing sport is a corneal abrasion from a foreign object entering the eye. Other injuries to the eye include grass, dirt or sand getting into the eye, which can cause a scratched cornea. Other injuries you can sustain include:

  • Orbital fracture (a break in one of the bones surrounding the eye)
  • Subconjunctival haemorrhage (broken blood vessel in the eye)
  • Eye swelling
  • Cuts, scratches or bruises on the eyelid
  • Retinal detachment

Do glasses protect me during sport?

Normal glasses and sunglasses are not enough to protect your eyes in sport as they don’t cover enough of the eye area, and some lenses are made from glass which can shatter. You should use sport-specific eyewear such as sports safety goggles/wraparound frames with impact resistant polycarbonate lenses.

How can I avoid eye injury in sport?

Proper eye protection is one of the best ways to prevent eye injury whilst playing sports. Many athletes wear eyewear whilst performing to protect their eyes, some baseball and hockey players, for example, also wear protective headgear with polycarbonate face masks or wire face shields.
