Who are Sightsavers?
Sight Savers is an international NGO that partners with on-the-ground partners in developing nations to treat and prevent avoidable blindness, as well as educate local people and health officials on the matter. As well as treating visual impairments, they rally equality for people with disabilities, so they can have equal participation in the work force and provide for themselves. The organisation was founded in the 1950’s by Sir John Foster Wilson, CBE. Wilson himself was blinded in a laboratory accident at school.
In its 65-year history, Sightsavers has distributed treatment to protect more than 295 million people against river blindness (onchocerciasis), carried out 6.1 million sight-restoring cataract operations and treated 43 million people with antibiotics to combat the potentially blinding infection trachoma.
Sightsavers current CEO Caroline Harper gave an impassioned and inspiring Ted Talk in July of 2018 about tackling trachoma. Trachoma is the world’s leading cause of infectious blindness, devastating some of the worlds most vulnerable people.
It is Sightsavers dedication to tackling the issue of blindness and the phenomenal reach they have attained to educate others about what can be done, that has won us over and we are delighted to be supporting their cause.
