Even before Greta Gerwig announced the release of her new film ‘Barbie’, the world was becoming obsessed with all things pink, as seen in March 2022 when Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli created the Maison Valentino Pink PP collection which featured an all-pink runway and an entire collection of bright, vibrant pink outfits.

The unique trend of barbiecore took over the fashion world as it encouraged everyone to embrace their unique style. The trend turned out to be a cultural nostalgia for all who grew up with barbie dolls around them.

We’re here to help you get the Barbie look. Have a look through our stylish Barbie glasses and sunglasses to help you tap into the trend.

Steal the look: Margot Robbie at Bondi Beach

Margot Robbie wore iconic Barbie looks throughout her entire press tour for the Barbie film.

She was seen at Bondi Beach sporting an almost identical look to the 1959 swimsuit Barbie.

What is Barbiecore?

Barbiecore is a hyper-feminine aesthetic that has been rising in pop culture for a few years now. The trend incorporates expert accessorising and all things pink but can also include blonde hair, high heels, barbie girl glittery nails and a positive/confident attitude. Early adopters of the trend include Nicki Minaj (who even calls her fans ‘Barbz’), Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

Those embracing the trend can be seen in pink clothing (usually dresses) along with bright pink accessories like shoes, handbags and Barbie-pink sunglasses. When you search the word ‘Barbiecore’ on TikTok, countless videos show up of make-up tutorials, hairstyle demos and outfits, all with a striking pink theme. Celebrities are also jumping on the social media trend - everyone from Lizzo and Hailey Bieber to Megan Fox and Anne Hathaway.

Does Barbie own the colour pink?

Well, sort of!

Pink only started to be used in the marketing for the famous doll in the ‘70s, in an attempt to attract younger children to the toy. That effort was a huge success and now pink is strongly associated with the brand.

The toy company that produces Barbie (Mattel) even copyrighted the Pantone colour ‘Barbie Pink’ (219 C), giving the company exclusive rights to use that very specific shade of pink.
