TV and Movie Characters Who Should Have Worn Contact Lenses

Our top picks of unfortunate TV and movie characters who would have found things all the more easier had they opted for contact lenses.

Velma from Scooby Doo

Poor, poor Velma. She always gets overlooked when it comes to Mystery Inc.’s success, which is slightly odd considering she’s the only one who actually does any investigating. Indeed, Velma seems to be eternally ignored when it comes to Fred picking the teams to split up into, and often finds herself scrabbling around in the dark alone looking for clues.

It’s happened in the original TV cartoon, and in the 2001 live-action movie, where unlucky Velma loses her glasses and literally crawls around looking for them at the feet of a creepy ghost or ghoul! Perhaps if she’d been smart enough to investigate the relatively low costs of buying contact lenses online then she might be able to keep hold of her eyewear.

Chandler Bing

Everybody’s favourite ‘Friend’, the hilarious and socially awkward Chandler always seems to be finding new ways to embarrass himself. One moment that sticks in our memories is in Season 7’s ‘The One with Phoebe’s Cookies’. In this classic episode, Chandler decides to take his new glasses out for a spin during an awkward enough racquetball game with his soon-to-be father-in-law, Jack Gellar.

It’s all going okay for the lovable Chandler until he enters the sauna with Jack, at which point his glasses fog up. With obscured vision, he winds up taking off his towel and taking a less-than-comfortable seat on Jack’s naked lap.

Often seen without glasses throughout the series’ 10 season run, it would seem safe to say that Chandler should stick with contact lenses and what he knows.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is probably one of the first names you think of when it comes to glasses, with those retro grandad frames having become synonymous with the character.

Skipping over the gaping plothole of a world full of magic and wizards not being able to correct refracted vision with a quick spell, let’s look back to that memorable time when Harry’s glasses fell off…

While it seemed they were destined to stay on forever, and ludicrous that Voldemort wouldn’t simply knock them off Harry’s face to blind him during a fight, it wasn’t until the Prisoner of Azkaban when the spectacles would take a cheeky fall.

During his fight with the Whomping Willow in the third movie, Harry has his glasses knocked off by the aggressive tree and finds himself without any form of visual correction. Had he just enquired about some contact lenses at the local Hogsmeade opticians, he might have not have ended up blind as a bat and up against a moving tree the size of a house.

This poor guy from The Mummy

I mean we all knew from his first scene that this guy wasn’t going to make it to the final credits. The character Bernard Burns may not be a household name when people think about this 1999 horror adventure (I mean, we couldn’t even find a GIF of him), but we all surely remember his gruesome demise.

During the stampede of people running away from the newly resurrected mummy, Bernard’s glasses are knocked from his face and crushed. Going full Velma, Bernie starts scrabbling around on the floor after his trusted spectacles, at which point he unknowingly ends up face to face with the mummy himself.

While we won’t go into full details about the terrifying fate that befell him (we still have nightmares!), it’s impossible to argue that the unlucky explorer would have found his chances of survival greatly increased had he been wearing a pair of contact lenses.

Austin Powers

We know he’s a product of the ‘60s and his iconic thick-rimmed glasses are a big part of his look, but the International Man of Mystery could have avoided a real kicking from Mini-Me in the second Austin Powers movie had he decided to slip in some contacts for the mission.

Indeed, it’s only till he gets his glasses back on that he realises that Mini-Me is squaring up to kick him in the face, and by that point it’s too late. While he goes on to win the fight, we have to admit it looked pretty painful when Dr. Evil’s clone got the better of poor Austin.

Dennis Nedry from Jurassic Park

Dennis Nedry was a hard person to like. From being the catalyst for the collapse of Jurassic Park, to creating arguably the world’s most annoying GIF, Dennis was the villain of the story. So, it seemed only fair when he met his end at the hands of a Dilophosaurus while trying to escape the island.

After crashing his jeep during the escape, Dennis loses his glasses in the rain and as a result doesn’t notice the dinosaur making its way into his car until he sits inside and shuts the door. Maybe with some contact lenses Dennis would have lived to see another day, and actor Wayne Knight could have made an appearance in the Jurassic World sequels.
