Create a routine

Have a set routine that maps out exactly which topics you’ll be focusing on and at exactly which times. Set specific times of study and break your studying into blocks, remembering to add breaks in between. Short 5-10-minute breaks are important to keep you feeling refreshed, focused and motivated. Sitting in one place for long periods can be tiring on the body, so remember to stretch and take a short walk during breaks as well. Have at least one day of the week where you do not study at all to give yourself time to relax and recharge.

Plug out of social media

We often lose track of how much time we spend on social media. How many times have you sworn you’re only going to watch one video, then before you know it, you’re stuck in a loop of cute cats and mysterious alien encounters? It happens to the best of us. The best thing to do if you can’t go completely cold turkey, is to permit yourself certain times when you can browse social.

Tell yourself you’ll check your phone for ten minutes at the start and at the end of the day, and stick to it. As well as preventing you from becoming distracted from your work, there’s a growing amount of evidence that suggests unplugging from social media can also be good for your overall mental health.

 

Tell others to respect your time

It’s usually when you want to focus on something important that the invites for social events suddenly start pouring in! Let everyone around you know that you’re focused on your studies and that they shouldn’t tempt you away from your textbooks. You can let your friends and family know exactly when your exams finish and when they can resume inviting you to Saturday nights out, but until then, tell them to respect your time.

Keep a clean and clear desk

A cluttered desk equals a cluttered mind. So, keep your desk clear of anything you don’t need or anything that may distract you from your studies. Make sure you have everything you need to get started when you sit down, so you don’t need to get up again. You may also want to purchase a table lamp for evening study to make sure your desk is well lit when you don’t have natural sunlight.

 

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water will contribute to your overall health. Staying hydrated is particularly important, but stick to water as opposed to anything high in sugar or caffeine. Avoid using coffee as a stimulant to keep you awake. When you feel tired, take a break or stop. You won’t digest anything when you’re trying to study if you’re not fully concentrating.  

 

Get a good night’s sleep

Make sure to get a good night’s sleep before your exam so you can wake up ready and rearing to go. You don’t want to be tired and half asleep while writing your paper. Also make sure you have everything you may need for the day prepared the night before.

 

Leave yourself plenty of time for study and don’t end up trying to cram information into your brain the night before as this rarely works. Studying may be a pain, but it will all be worth it when you get the results you want. Good luck.
